BIODIVERSITY
You can't have a healthy planet without it!

Biodiversity: noun, from Latin bios life and diversitas, variety.

Biodiversity is the technical term that refers to the totality of different kinds of living species on earth.

Biodiversity studies are essential to the proper monitoring of our planet's health. Any environment that shows a decline in biodiversity is sending a strong warning signal that we ourselves may be in danger.

Biodiversity research is extremely vital to planning where to place preserves, assessing ecological health of a region, and knowing just who we share this planet with.
Unfortunately, the people who are best trained as professional assessors of biodiversity are taxonomists. Ever since 1975, the number of university graduates in taxonomy has seriously declined.

The Virtual Museum of Natural History is dedicated to promoting biodiversity studies by publishing relevant data on this site, conducting field surveys and training a new generation of taxonomists.
