Hermann Schlegel's color prints, published with Solomon Müller, 1830s-1840s. Leiden, The Netherlands. The large New Guinea skink known as Müller's skink, originally described as Emoia muelleri, but now classified as Sphenomorphus muelleri. The species was named for Dutch zoologist Solomon Müller (which becomes "muelleri" when Latinized, as Latin has no umlaut). Shown is an unpublished draft f the illustration that would later appear in print. Click on picture to go to Web of Life species account.
Shown below is the original color plate depicting the gorgeous green tree monitor, Varanus prasinus, published in 1845. This hand-colored picture is part of a now very rare book of plates that followed the written descriptions of many species of reptiles and amphibians, largely from Indo-Australia.
