The National Museums of Scotland
include the Royal Museum of Scotland (left), which is home to the national
galleries of zoology, botany, paleontology, and entomology. The museum is
located in Edinburgh's Old Town, not far from Edinburgh Castle.
Address:
Chambers Street, Edinburgh EH1 1JF, Scotland, United Kingdom. |
| A "must-see" for serious
naturalists.
The impressive Victorian architecture is as much an exhibit
as any of the gallery materials. The main foyer (right) was described by
one reviewer as being reminiscent of "a bird cage for
pterodactyls." The museum's information booth, gift shop, and
rotating exhibits are found in the foyer (below), along with two large koi
pools.
Exhibits include displays of giant squids, myriad insects, birds from
the tropics, and many anthropological displays. There is a new gallery of
fishes which is one of the finest on earth. The museum also has a fine
library open to the public.
