Genus Batrachoseps
(batracho- frog, seps head)
Slender salamanders
The members of this genus are distributed in
western North America, from near the southern tip of Alaska south through
California. These amphibians are characterized by extremely
elongate, very thin worm-like bodies. The limbs are so short and
thin that they are frequently overlooked by casual observers who do
mistake the salamanders for worms. The limbs end in very short, blunt
digits.
Slender salamanders are part of the tribe
Bolitoglossini, in which there is direct development from embryo to a
small adult-like stage within the egg.
