Range: Mountainous regions of Middle America.

Description:

Natural History: These birds reside at high elevations in forests from central Mexico into the Amazonian basin of South America. They are typically solitary birds that feed on a wide variety of foods including smaller vertebrates, insects, snails, fruits and seeds.

Reproduction: Lays two or three eggs in holes in trees, which are incubated alternately by both parents.

Taxonomy & Relationships: There are four other species in the genus Pharomachrus, ranging from Middle to South America.
