Kookaburra / Laughing Jackass

Photo & text by Dr. Robert Sprackland.

Range: North and eastern Australia and southern New Guinea.

Diagnosis: A large kingfisher with a huge dark bill, dark eye mask, short legs and a white band across the nape.

Description: A perching bird that may approach 50 cm / 18 inches in length.

Natural History: Kookaburras are the largest birds in the kingfisher group. They are formidable predators that hunt and prey on other animals, including insects, lizards, and snakes. Their fondness for insects makes them important to farmers for agricultural pest control.

Useful as they are, kookaburras are not always because of their loud and raucous call. It is this cry hat gives them the bush name "laughing jackass." Though primarily active by day, they wake early and their call is often enough to awaken nearby humans.

Life expectancy is around twenty years.

Reproduction: Egg layer.

Taxonomy & Relationships: Four species are recognized in the genus Dacelo.
