Natural History:
Kookaburras are the largest birds in the
kingfisher group. They are formidable predators that hunt and prey on
other animals, including insects, lizards, and snakes. Their fondness for
insects makes them important to farmers for agricultural pest control.
Useful as they are, kookaburras are not always
because of their loud and raucous call. It is this cry hat gives them the
bush name "laughing jackass." Though primarily active by day,
they wake early and their call is often enough to awaken nearby humans.
Life expectancy is around twenty years.
