Turtles and tortoises

Definition: Reptiles that lack (or have secondarily lost) the postorbital openings in the skull, lack teeth, and have the body covered in an upper (carapace) and lower (plastron) set of shells. Many species are marine or aquatic, and these have some degree of cutaneous respiration. Others are strictly terrestrial and may go for years without drinking standing water. All reproduce via internal fertilization and lay shelled eggs.
