The earless monitor,
Lanthanotus borneensis
Steindachner, 1878, from Sarawak on the
island of Borneo. This extremely rare species grows to about 45 cm/18
inches in total length, but has been the subject of many studies far in
excess of its physically diminutive stature. Photo from exhibit at
the American Museum of Natural History by Dr. Robert Sprackland.
Lanthanotus means "with hidden ears" in
Greek, in reference to the absence of external ear openings. Lanthanotus
is the only known living platynotan without ear openings.
