Range: Arid regions of southeastern Australia.

Diagnosis:

Description: A stout-bodied lizard with soft spines on the body and a pronounced spiny throat pouch. When alarmed, the lizard may inflate the pouch, making the spiny beard look both large and thorny. (Pogona is Greek for "bearded one.")

Natural History:

Reproduction: Lays eggs in tunnels excavated by the female, or under thick hollow logs.

Taxonomy & Relationships: There are several fairly similar species within the genus Pogona.
