Armadillo lizards
Armadillo lizards represent an entirely African family of
live-bearing species. The largest may grow to about 49 cm / 20 inches, but most
are between 15-30 cm (6-12 inches) in total length. Cordylids are recognized by
the depressed, arrow-shaped head which is covered in large plates, and strongly
keeled tail scales that form annuli. Eyelids and ear openings are present. All
species have well-developed limbs with five digits. The skin contains
osteoderms. The teeth are hollow at the base. The parasternum is absent.
Habitat preference is for arid desert and savannah regions.
Most species are largely saxicolous (living in rocky areas).
