VMNH Seeks Help for Museums
affected by Asian Tsunami
The
tsunami that swept through several south Asian countries on Christmas,
2004, caused extensive destruction to low-lying areas in its wake. In
addition to the horrendous toll taken on people and villages, we are
concerned that important national repositories may also have been severely
damaged. Such institutions as museums, zoos, and university collections
all fall within the scope of VMNH interests.
We are therefore asking our colleagues,
particularly those with first hand experience in the affected countries,
to provide the VMNH with data regarding damage, help needed to repair
facilities and collections, and contact information, including web links,
where assistance may be directed. Anyone with information may direct it to
the attention of the VMNH via e-mail at director@curator.org.
Please let us know of any specific requirements about what is needed, i.e.,
for cash, equipment, workers, etc. We shall also publish any links to
websites for our Asian colleagues and their institutions so they can get
the word out regarding their needs.
Similarly, biologists involved in surveying
or monitoring biodiversity in any of the stricken areas are urged to share
databases with the VMNH. We shall ensure that such data are freely
available to other workers who do follow-up work to gauge the effects of
the disasters on animal populations.
