BOLIVIA. Cob 8 Reales, ND (1576-78)-P L/B. Potosi Mint. Philip II
BOLIVIA. Cob 8 Reales, ND (1576-78)-P L/B. Potosi Mint. Philip II. NGC AU Details--Test Cut.
KM-5.1; Cal-670; Paoletti-56 (same obverse die). Weight: 27.45 gms. A stunning example of this RARE Cob featuring a clear L-over-B assayer initial. The previous assayer mark was erased and the new one was haphazardly placed below it, indicative of the disorganized nature of this very early period for the newly-established Potosi mint. The coin was nevertheless produced to a high standard, displaying a crisp mintmark and denomination along with nearly full peripheral legends that include the complete monarch's name. The reverse offers another well-placed strike with great detail. A test cut at about 1 o'clock is the only drawback to note, but it is fairly thin and does not proceed too deeply into the flan.
